City teams look to solidify playoff runs in Week 6

The high school football regular season has surpassed the halfway point, which means the playoff race is in full force for teams around the state.

Here's a quick look at what to expect from the city schools in Week 6 as they try to solidify their place within their districts.

Eisenhower (1-4, 1-1) at Piedmont (1-4, 0-2)

The Eagles found themselves in the win column for the first time last week after defeating district punching bag Northwest Classen, but Piedmont presents a much more difficult challenge.

The teams have split their only two matchups.

This could be one of the biggest matchups in District 5A-2 this season, for the winner would have an outside shot at the fourth and final playoff spot depending on how Woodward finishes.

With No. 1 Carl Albert, No. 6 Bishop McGuinness and No. 7 Guthrie still on the schedule, a loss to the Wildcats could eliminate the Eagles from playoff contention.

Piedmont, which lost 34-7 to Carl Albert last week, enters the contest on a three-game losing streak. Its only win came in Week 2 against Class 4A Weatherford, 21-10.

Piedmont has been outscored by an average of 40.25-14.2 this season.

Last season: Ike, 26-21

Lawton High (3-2, 1-1) at Putnam City West (1-4, 1-1)

After proving themselves against Deer Creek last week, the Wolverines will take on lowly PC West tonight in Warr Acres. The Patriots fell to Del City last week, 49-13.

LHS leads the head-to-head series, 19-10, winning the last eight matchups dating back to 2006. The Patriots' last win over the Wolverines came in 1997 by a score of 28-19.

LHS shouldn't have much trouble against the struggling PCW defense, which has given up 33 points per game thus far. The Patriots have difficulty on offense as well, averaging only 15.6 points per game.

A hiccup here could prove problematic for the Wolverines, for they currently linger in the fourth-fifth place zone of District 6A-II-1.

Last season: LHS, 44-7

Western Heights (3-2, 0-2) at MacArthur (2-3, 1-1)

After starting 1-3 for the first time since 2006, the Highlanders got the luck of the draw by having the worst two teams in District 5A-1 — Western Heights and Southeast — next on the schedule.

Mac took care of Southeast last week, 48-0, and a similar outcome could be in store tonight at Cameron Stadium.

The Highlanders have won 17 of 19 matchups with the Jets, owning the head-to-head series since 1990 with 16-straight wins. Western Heights' last victory came in 1985 via a 16-6 decision.

With No. 5 Altus awaiting next week, expect Mac to play perhaps its most polished game yet in preparation. Last season's meeting with the Jets lasted less than two hours, courtesy of a running clock.

Last season: Mac, 41-0
