Lawton High guard Emajhawun (0) Kelly drives past Eisenhower's Antonio Gordon (11) for a basket during the first half of Thursday's game. Kelly finished with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to top the Eagles, who went on to win, 79-56.
Lawton is Eisenhower's eagle nest.
The Eagles claimed the city championship on Thursday night, as both teams soared past Lawton High in convincing fashion. In total, the Ike boys and girls combined to finish 10-0 against intracity competition.
The Lady Eagles began the crowning night with a 70-39 drubbing of the Lady Wolverines, and the boys followed suit, taking advantage of a depleted LHS depth chart to pull away in the second half for a 79-56 victory.
Ike caps off a successful regular season at home at 6 p.m. Friday against Putnam City. Meanwhile, LHS completed its season and now looks to regional tournament action beginning next week.
The LHS boys finished with an 8-13 record, dropping their final five contests. The girls finished 4-15.
Farmer leads Ike boys past LHS
With his team struggling to shake a motivated Wolverines squad, Ike senior Kevin Farmer could think of no better way to give the Eagles the spark they needed.
With LHS threatening to tie the game at 40 with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter, Farmer intercepted a Nate Eggleton pass intended for big man Ashawnti Hunter and sprinted down the court.
Teammate Antonio Gordon was in position for an alley-oop basket, but Farmer had to take his opportunity. With only one Wolverine in the vicinity, Farmer went up and threw down a thunderous left-handed dunk.
The force of his hand hitting the rim was so ferocious, he had to leave the court for a few minutes with what appeared to be a possible finger cut. However, his minor injury wasn't in vain, for Ike used the momentous play to go on 39-20 run to close out the game and the win.
Farmer later returned to score four more points.
With multiple college coaches in attendance, including Oklahoma State assistant coach Scott Sutton, Farmer played perhaps his best game of the season, finishing with 22 points in the Eagles' 23-point win.
Ike coach Todd Millwee said he's been impressed with Farmer's performances down the stretch.
"For about four games in a row, he's been playing unbelievable," Millwee said. "He's led us in rebounding the last two games, and he's kind of one of our captains out there directing traffic."
Gordon and RJ Fisher also had big performances, combining for 32 points. Those two, along with Farmer, were the catalysts for the Eagles' 49-point second half.
Hunter hit a jumper at the buzzer to give LHS a 32-30 lead at halftime, but the Wolverines' energy greatly diminished in the second half, managing only 24 points in the final two frames.
Ike's effort in the second half was exactly what Millwee said he's desired from his squad.
"We were playing well on defense and pushing the ball up the floor," Millwee said. "That past few games we've been coasting a little too much. It's hard work to get after it, but it's worth it. We want our season to last a few more weeks, and we know it's hard to get up and play pressure defense, but that was our message (at halftime), and they all bought in."
LHS coach Eric Wiley said the Wolverines were missing a few key players, and fatigue hurt his team during the crucial parts of the game.
"We came out in the third quarter and had a couple of turnovers, and then we were playing catch-up basketball," Wiley said. "We were trying to make a 10-point shot, and there's no such thing. We forced things, the game got out of hand and fatigue set in. Once the fatigue set in, they outlasted us."
Emajhawun Kelly was the only Wolverine to score in double figures, finishing with 18 points.
Ike now sports a record of 15-5.
Ike girls make quick work of Lawton High
Eisenhower's Ginger Reece tries to score against Lawton High's Alie Warner (31). Reece finished with 19 points as the Lady Eagles finished off a perfect season against city teams.
It didn't take long for the Lady Eagles (15-5) to put their mark on the game.
Led by Delicia Brown and Ginger Reece, Ike scored the first 15 points of the game, setting the tone for the 31-point win. Brown and Reece combined for 21 points in the first quarter alone, eventually finishing the night with 19 points apiece.
Gena Rogers and Jaeda Reed contributed their share as well, scoring 15 and 11 points, respectively.
"Ginger Reece did a really good job of getting back in the rhythm of things and shot the ball really well," Ike coach Daniel Wall said. "I'm extremely proud of Delicia Brown as well. She attacked really well, and she had an unbelievable game tonight."
"Jaeda Reed, her presence on the inside in unbelievable, and Gena Rogers brought the fire and intensity like she does. It was a great all-around night, and I'm proud of our girls and the team effort."
Additionally, the Lady Eagles' defense forced 33 LHS turnovers in the win.
The Eagles have now won two-straight ballgames after falling by double-digits to Class 6A No. 1 Putnam City West. Wall said he is pleased with the way his team bounced back from the past week.
"We just gotta keep playing," Wall said. "The girls showed up the other night and we were able to get a win against MacArthur, and they showed up tonight, did what we were supposed to do and got a win against Lawton High. Our plan for Friday is to go out and have a lot of fun, and it's going to be all about these senior girls."
Tyeshia Anderson led LHS with 12 points, and Kamryn Simien pitched in 10 points.
