Eisenhower takes pair from Lawton High

Eisenhower proved once again on Tuesday night why it is not only a force in Lawton, but also in the entire state.

Both Eagles squads are ranked in the Top 5 of Class 5A, and they cruised to a pair of victories over Lawton High at Wolverines Gymnasium.

A strong second-quarter push help life the Ike girls over LHS, 77-55, and the boys followed suit with an emphatic 84-64 victory behind monster nights from Antonio Gordon and RJ Fisher.

The Eagles return to action Friday for road contests with Del City. Meanwhile, the Wolverines close their three-game homestand with a matchup against Choctaw, which sports two Top 15 teams.

Reed, Ike girls power by LHS

Eisenhower's Jaeda Reed slides by a Lawton High defender. Reed had 24 points in the Eagles' win.

Jaeda Reed made it clear early on she would have to be stopped for Lawton High to have a chance.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Reed was punishing in the paint, leading Ike to a convincing 77-55 win. Reed led all scorers with 24 points.

Eagles coach Daniel Wall said Reed's performance was impressive, but he also liked the way others contributed in their own ways.

"Hats off to Jaeda Reed — she did a great job inside," Wall said. "She was unstoppable. Hallie Horton also just came out flying around like crazy. Mikaela Hall did a great job of complementing Jaeda on the inside and rebounded the ball really well offensively. We had some unselfish play, and I'm extremely proud of the girls."

Hall finished 10 points, while Horton and Gena Rogers each added nine.

LHS was within six at 25-19 going into the second quarter thanks to the hot hand of Kamryn Simien, who hit three 3-pointers during her 11-point opening quarter, but that was the closest the Wolverines got to scoring an upset.

Ike locked down defensively with a full-court press, holding the Wolverines to only 20 points in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach. Simien managed only four points the rest of the contest, finishing with 15 points.

"We left (Simien) open a little bit on the press, and she got hot," Wall said. "We stayed steady and resilient and did a good job of adjusting defensively. The girls did a great job with their defensive effort and full-court pressure and applied it."

LHS' Tyeshia Anderson and Alie Warner did their part, combining for 32 points, but unforced errors kept Otis Gentry's team from cutting into the deficit. The Wolverines committed 27 turnovers in the loss.

"It was lack of concentration on our girls' part," Gentry said. "We go over everything in practice, but when we get into the game, we lose concentration. We can't do that against a team like that. We gotta stay focused."

Ike boys' dynamic duo too much for Wolverines

RJ Fisher (12) takes a close-range shot over Lawton High defender Ashawnti Hunter (33). Fisher finished with 24 points.

When a team has as many weapons as Ike has, losing is a rare occurrence.

Behind an offensive show from Antonio Gordon and RJ Fisher, the Eagles extended their winning streak to nine games with an 84-64 drubbing of LHS. The deadly combo scored early and often, combining for 50 points in the Eagles' 12th victory of the season.

Even Ike coach Todd Millwee was surprised by the duo's scoring output. Gordon led with 26 points and Fisher was close behind at 24.

"I didn't realize they scored that much," Millwee said. "Our usual game plan is to get RJ going in the paint — he's such a good passer and he's so unselfish. Early on, we took Antonio out and talked to him about how he can get a lot of points if he goes in there and rebounds, and that's what he did. He started playing a lot harder and got a lot of extra points, cheap ones just by going in there and crashing the glass."

Meanwhile, Kevin Farmer finished with 13 points, and Mark Berry, who transferred from LHS during the summer, had 10 points. Berry started playing only last weekend in the Shortgrass Tournament in Altus.

Millwee said it is going to be hard for Berry to adjust to the rotation, but he is making strides thus far.

"He's a little behind on certain places where we want him to be and what we want him to look for," Millwee said. "He's a good rebounder and can really get up. He's like Antonio in that if he can get offensive rebounds, that's not much coaching, that's just getting it, and that's what we want him to do. He can help us on defense, too, by blocking shots."

Ashawnti Hunter (19), Emajhawun Kelly (19) and Nate Eggleton (16) teamed up for all but 10 of the Wolverines' points, but it wasn't enough.

LHS coach Eric Wiley said the loss had more to do with mistakes than his team's inability to match Ike's production.

"Eisenhower is a well-oiled machine, and we just couldn't afford to make mistakes," Wiley said. "A lot of those were our mistakes — unforced errors. That's how the game got out of hand."
